As Holly has noted, we're in the waiting room. Not the actual one, the figurative one. We are parental tweeners. In limbo. The kid is taking his sweet time. And who can blame him? You only get one royal entrance. Might as well toss some suspense in there.
So while we wait, I thought that, rather than listen to the usual lite hits that infect waiting rooms, I would compile my own Soundtrack While We Wait. (Disclaimer: these songs are chosen mostly for their titles. I am fully aware that these songs aren't actually about birth.)
The Waiting : Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Appropriately our blog title and track one.
Waiting Room : Fugazi
"I am a patient boy. I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait."
Tired of Waiting For You : The Kinks
[Enter experienced parent comment here, options include: "You think you're tired now?" and any sequence of eye rolls and scoffs that your tenure allows.]
Born At the Right Time : Paul Simon
Trying to maintain perspective. Repeat after me, "The baby will come when he's supposed to."
Right In Time : Lucinda Williams
More perspective. "The way you move is right in time with me."
Meet Me In The Middle : Bob Dylan
A stab at compromise. And, yes, I realize that to you experienced parents, that's a real kneeslapper. It would probably be more fitting if the song title ended in a question mark.
Hurry Up, Let's Go : The Shout Out Louds
Imperatives cut through, right?
Hello It's Late : Stone Temple Pilots
I've been told that sarcasm is not effective parenting. Oooh, it must really reinforce your great parenting skills to tell me that. From your lips into the stone tablets in the Hallowed Hall of Absolutely Amazing Parenting. (I think it's somewhere in Lehi. Between a Costa Vida, Electric Beach, and Lactation Station in some strip mall.)
Taking A Walk : John Prine
This song represents one of the many things we do to try to encourage our boy to come see the sunshine.
Tomorrow Is A Long Time : Bob Dylan
One of my favorite Bob Dylan songs. Quiet and warm enough to welcome.
Take Your Time : Low
A moment of zen.
Patience : Guns 'N Roses
If anyone understands what it means to tax the patience of those who love you most, it's W. Axl Rose.
Any additions? We've got nothing but time. (For the record, that's a Jackson Browne tune.)
