This morning was the last ever edition of KRCL's Thursday Breakfast Jam as we know it, with my friend David Morrissey DJ'ing. If you never listened, 30 lashings. If you did, you know all about Dave's has exceptional taste in music, what a great guy he is, and how he might be the most supportive DJ for local artists. That assessment may or may not be tainted by the fact that he played my songs [had me as a guest in the studio, was the first DJ to play the new album, welcomed Leo into the world by playing "Western Skies"], but he also played stuff by some of my favorite Utahns: Atherton, Band of Annuals, Libbie Linton, Marcus Bently, Sarah Sample, The Devil Whale, and so on. Dave is also responsible for pushing me towards two of my favorite records this year [Jason Collett's Here's To Being Here and Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago] as well as heaps last year. It doesn't hurt that he's a huge Red Sox fan and did some time in New York.
Anyone who's followed the story behind "The New KRCL" knows that their little format change is no small controversy. Google it, if you want all the dirt. I guess I can see why they'd do it, but it still makes me sad. And I'm not totally convinced it makes the station any better.
In all fairness, though, Dave is getting the Thursday 8-10pm slot and– while I think he got gypped (sp?) out of a better timeslot– I will listen plenty. You should too.

This morning alone, he played stuff by Spoon, Wilco, Paul Simon, The Lemonheads, Tom Petty, Josh Ritter, Beirut, Neutral Milk Hotel, Atherton, Josh Ritter, me, Ryan Adams, Neil Young, Libbie Linton, Eels, Band of Annuals, Elvis Presley, Elvis Costello, Sera Cahoone...COME ON, PEOPLE.

Aaawwww, shucks, Paul! I just saw that my whole title is on the side of your blog (my cousin Anne...in case you forgot). A name drop in a song really gives me a lifelong image I need to uphold, but what kind of image is that? Anyway, I actually heard you on the radio once, and I was all sorts of excited. Now I know the likely source. Now if you could just break into the FM100 Christmas album circuit...
first thurday without dave's breakfast jam- was not as easy to wake up.
on the plus side, I did not miss babs.
Congrats on little Leo! Fun stuff huh. C.Floyd came to stay with us permanently on 11/22/07 at 12:11pm.
I will peek in on you guys periodically.
