Because today I'm on the hunt.
I’ve compiled a playlist of lullabyes that we play [along with a daily allowance of Beatles & Wilco & a steady diet of static] for Leo. It has some staples: Innocence Mission, Tom Waits, and a lot of the songs Scott Wiley produced for two not-to-be-judged-by-their-covers lullabye albums [a new one of which is in the works]. There might even be a Dixie Chicks song on our little playlist.
I’ve also been gathering songs about being a parent. My favorite parenthood-tackling album to date, with apologies to Bill Cosby, is Soft Spot by Clem Snide.

Eef, the band's principal songwriter, tackles marriage and parenthood on a very real, smart, sweet, funny level. I loved this album, thanks to cousin Mark, long before I was ever even married, so its greatness stands independent of my current context. There’s some Wilco and Beatles and Sarah Harmer and other great stuff in there too.
So, dear readers, this is my dual challenge for you: Help me complete these 2 playlists, one being a lullabye-ish playlist and the other having songs about being/becoming a parent. Take it to the comments.
Which brings us to my friend Dominic.
Two things keep me up at night these days. One is our resident night owl Leo [probably just trying to live up to the Leia Bell print on his nursery wall].
The other is Dominic. He writes some of the best songs I have ever heard, with a sort of effortlessness and swagger and sweetness and simplicity and smarts that you don’t hear everyday. Why does this contribute to my current state of sleep deprivation? Because he does it so well, in spite of the huge demands of medical school and moving west [what, what] and being a great dad and being an above-average husband. I used to go over to Dom & Katie’s apartment in Brooklyn to play music. Dom would nonchalantly trot out 3-4 new songs, like Cadillac Diamond or I've Got Family or Apocalypse Wow. Meanwhile, I would be nearing the 10th month of trying to complete the 2nd verse of some song of mine that wouldn’t even make the record. Needless to say, the train home rode rails of doubt and "why do you even try?"I love Dominic- a great friend and a demoralizingly fine artist/songwriter. I'm pretty sure you'll love this song of his, fittingly about being a parent, performed with his new project, The Lower West. [Pay no mind to the video sync. Close your eyes, if that helps.]

Have you considered a career in copywriting?
For baby:
I hope your Dixie Chicks song choices included "Lullaby" and/or "Godspeed".
For parents:
I love the song "Mama you Sweet" by Lucinda Williams. Cory can't stand it. Maybe just girls get it. It makes me think about my mom. And being a mom. And how it's hard but so lovely.
Kathleen Edwards "Scared at Night". Good song. The third verse gets a little hairy when discussing shooting a cat. The song makes you think of being a kid, being a parent, a cats.
Let me know what you guys end up with.
Maybe try this:

Creepy. They have Nine Inch Nails too.
Ok, so I know this is very Happy Valley, but I've discovered that I'm very Happy Valley...so shoot me. Or write me into one of your songs :). (You know I love that you made me famous). Anywho, Peter Breinholt's Sweetly Sleeps is very good and only applicable for this child, assuming you'll have more. Also, Paul Simon's album Surprise has some good stuff, but it's mostly father/daughter. You could always get back in the studio and cover a bunch of lullabies and make them applicable to Leo. That's my vote...as long as you use you Jesus Once Was A Little Child. Please let us all know the final product. I'm pretty sure I speak for everyone that knows you that we all feel more validated when you have approved the music we listen to. It makes us cooler.

Oh, yep, that song was awesome. Thanks for posting it.
What a cute little guy! Fun to see pictures of your family! I run the risk of being boring, but a favorite of our family is Paul Simon, "Father and Daughter." (pretend it says son)!
Anyway, congrats on the new addition and forget this NY attire, he needs some good red sox gear... it's on it's way!
I think it goes without saying that it's a bit intimidating suggesting music to YOU. Here's a couple we like:
"Slumber My Darling" Alison Krauss and YoYo Ma, Shawn Colvin's "Holiday Songs and Lullabies" album, "Lullaby" Jack Johnson, "Hold You in My Arms" Ray Lamontange, "Love You More" Alexi Murdoch, even Love Me Tender. Hands down though, your Lullabye and primary song cds are our kids' favorite.
I'd love to see the playlist when you get it put together.
this is quite possibly the wordiest post ever written.
For parental humor...
"Stay up late"--Talking Heads
"In the Middle of the Night"-Billy Joel
For the lullaby CD I love the song:
"Angels on your pillow"--I couldn't find our CD to tell you the artist--but I found this link with the lyrics, which also had some other beautiful lyrics/lullabies...

I also like "Goodnight my angel" --Billy Joel.
OUr kids love anything Uncle Paul sings.
The one song that has resonated with me and all of the kids is..."My Heavenly Father Loves Me (Whenever I hear the song of a bird...) Janey calls it her song--but they all request It just seems to soothe us all.
I'd love to hear your collection!
That Dominic Moore is so effortlessly cool. always such great songs.
here's my addition to the list of songs about parenting:
1. A boy named Sue- johnny cash
2. a minor incident- badly drawn boy (lyrics to be understood out of the context of the movie script preferably)
and my mom and grandma always sang me "let the rest of the world go by." that's what I sing to my kids.
the only recorded version I have of the song is by don edwards.
Good suggestions. We will add them to our queue.
The Wiley/Jacobsen blog feud escalates. First, my taste in movies, now my word count. This doesn't bode well for Kingfisher 2014, when we finish album #3.
I hope that it's okay that I'm posting on your blog. I am a friend of Holly's and I met you today at the cf walk.
I love the song "Lullaby to an Anxious Child" by Sting.
